Ewe Care is Australia’s first-ever sustainable skincare brand produced with locally harvested sheep milk and natural Tasmanian botanicals. Founded by family-owned and operated Tasmanian farm, Grandvewe, Ewe Care was launched in July, 2021 during the height of the pandemic and is managed by its co-founder, Nicole Gilliver. Motivated by sustainability and waste minimisation, Ewe Care repurposes sheep milk not suitable for cheesemaking and transforms the by-product into a line of high-quality, luxurious skincare that serves as a better choice for ageing and compromised skin, including planet Earth.
Formulated in a day and night cream option, the Awassi sheep milk formula is rich in vitamins in A, B, C, D and E, including a host of minerals, proteins and essential fatty acids for skin sustenance and protection. Combined with botanicals native to Tasmania, the hydrating ingredients replenish skin with phytonutrients while combatting free radical damage, improving collagen production, soothing compromised skin conditions, fighting acne-causing bacteria and restoring optimal skin barrier function.
“Ewe Care addresses a significant gap in the Australian skincare market,” Nicole tells The Zine. “It gives life to unwanted ingredients and materials that would otherwise be discarded and allows us to turn the cost of waste into a progressive, profitable, and marketable product.”
As the only milk source to contain naturally occurring levels of vitamin C, sheep milk was traditionally used in local villages of the upper Himalayan region for wound healing and scar management. In modern skincare, topical benefits are being rediscovered due to the ingredient’s high levels of lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid, and antimicrobial A2 proteins, as it aids in the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.
A proud defender of the environment, Ewe Care sources ingredients unique to Tasmania and includes botanicals such as Cape Grim Water, an ingredient regarded for its purity, Fucoidan Kelp Extract, Costal Tea Tree Oil and Tasmanian Mountain Peppeberry, an antioxidant that promotes healthy skin cell function in sensitive and compromised skin types.
Driven by their philosophy “From the earth, for the Earth”, Ewe Care is the first skincare company in Australia to utilise 100% home-compostable packaging across its entire range using organic elements that degrade naturally, and safely, in the environment.
“Our innovative and sustainable packaging is intrinsically tied to Ewe Care’s core values,” said Nicole. “Customers can adopt the farm’s ethos and repurpose elements of the packaging into application sponges or a keepsake box.”
Housed in environmentally friendly and locally made ceramic vessels, Ewe Care’s reusable cream jars are handcrafted using a 35-step process by a local ceramicist. Each piece encapsulates a unique aesthetic pattern designed from burnt Awassi sheep wool creating textural ornamentation. Ewe Care is serving the environment by using raw materials while delivering an experience that is both functional and sensory. The 60ml cream holders come in light and dark colouring to differentiate between the day and night formulas.
Available nationwide, Ewe Care also provides customers with a refillable 60ml sachet option. For more information visit https://ewecare.com.au/
