Saving the planet with WeWOOD Timepieces

The WWF estimates that 12-15 million hectares are lost each year. That’s equivalent to 36 football fields per minute.

Concerned? We should be. Forests are home to a vast portion of the world’s biodiversity, a source of healthy oxygen for all living things, and a home and source of livelihood for many humans.

So what can we do? Organisations such as WWF are constantly working hard to fight the battles against deforestation. But unfortunately, not all of us can drop everything to save the Earth. But what if you could make a difference just by being stylish? WeWOOD Timepieces makes this possible!

With the first watch designed in Italy in 2010, WeWOOD is the eco-friendly child of an Italian shoemaker and watch enthusiast, and two environment-loving entrepreneurs. By teaming up with American Forests and Trees for the Future, WeWOOD promises to plant one tree for every watch sold. Within the first three months of business, WeWOOD had planted 5,000 trees, and are now aiming for infinity and beyond.

44 Saving the planet with WeWOOD Timepieces 2Each WeWOOD piece is made out of sustainable scrapwood and uses state-of-the-art Miyota for timekeeping. The wood means that all watches are splash proof, and are genuinely unique to the eye and the touch – an experience that is not possible with metallic materials. Best of all, they are extremely light, giving the watch a barely-there comfort for everyday wear.

Our favourite design for women is the Moon Beige piece. The slimmer profile of the Moon range gives that extra feminine touch, with this particular piece made of 100% natural maple wood. For men, try the Metis Brown timepiece. This watch is made of striking 100% natural Red Wing Celtis and sports a distinctively square and trendy watch face.

Batteries can be easily replaced by any watch store, and bands are easily adjusted by removing links with a pinhead. All watches are also hypo-allergenic.

WeWOOD takes the negativity out of consumerism and gives the power of change back to the average Joe. Every time we go to check the time, it’s a warm reminder that such a cool, rustic accessory was traded for some good and wholesome medicine for Mother Nature.

WeWOOD watches are available in Australia and the USA. To get your own sweetly satisfying timepiece and plant your own tree, visit WeWOOD here.
