Foxtel has announced the release of Wentworth, a new and exciting Aussie drama series which will hit Australian screens on the 1st of May. Wentworth is a re-imagining of the popular iconic series Prisoner, which ran from 1979 – 1986.
Foxtel’s Head of Drama stated that after reexamining the popularity of the Prisoner series, the team decided to create a contemporary drama similar to the older series. Wentworth is being produced by Jo Porter and began filming in Melbourne over four months from October last year.
After watching a pilot episode which was released for the media in February of this year, Ben Pobjie from The Age, reported the Wentworth episode as “a triumph”. He praised the cast and writers, adding that Wentworth demonstrated powerful, cinematic drama with “echoes” of the original Prisoner series.
As the original series was such an international success, Foxtel expects the new series of Wentworth to generate a similar response. Fans of Prisoner will be pleased to know that some of their favourite characters from the classic series will be making a comeback in Wentworth.
Although the first series will feature different actors, the overall storyline and characters from Prisoner will remain the same. Some of the actors starring in the new series of Wentworth include Daniele Cormack and Nicole Da Silva.
Wentworth airs on Foxtel’s SoHo Channel on the 1st May. For more information, go to http://wentworth.sohotv.com.au/
