October 1st, is a significant and special day to all coffee lovers from around the world, as it is ‘International Coffee Day’. Who doesn’t love a good coffee, whether you’re relaxing with a cuppa at home, socialising out at a cafe, grabbing one on your morning walk, drinking one before work, or to help you stay awake at night to finish off work you didn’t get done.

Coffee is consumed in a variety of different ways, of course being drunk either hot or cold, but more recently, particular trends have risen, such as; whipped coffee and the increasingly popular ‘cold brew’. In recent years ‘cold brew’, has become a highly popular beverage to many, with research showing that the category will grow by 25.%, globally by 2025. Cold Brew has also become popular within the warmer months of the year, making it the perfect caffeine kick for all us Aussies this Summer. Here is everything you need to know about the latest and greatest “coffee trend”.

The origins of cold brew coffee

Back in the 17th century, the Dutch created the earliest known record of cold-brewing, as sailors began preserving coffee concentrate as it would require less space on ships and keep during long voyages overseas. These Dutch sailors then introduced it to Japan, who were already cold-brewing tea, and the Kyoto-drip or Japanese-style coffee was born.

During the mid-19th century after the Algerian War, the French created ‘Mazagran’, a drink named after the Algerian city. The drink was made of sweetened coffee concentrate and mixed with cold water over ice… This is known as the first take on the style that is drunk today. Eventually cold brewing made its way into cultures around the world, especially over in the New Orleans, where they’re famous for brewing with chicory.

What is cold brew?

The term ‘cold’ in cold brew is a bit misleading… Cold brew is when coffee grounds are brewed for an extended period of time (from up to 12 to 24 hours) in tepid or room temperature water (not cold water) to form a concentrate. The concentrate is then diluted with water or milk and served cold. When coffee is brewed this way, it reduces the rate of oxidation significantly… This means that cold brew contains no stale flavours, therefore creating a less bitter taste than hot coffee.

Without hot water cold brew will loose the fruity, bright and aromatic characteristics and flavours, that is normally associated with a cup of coffee. Although cold brew brands like, Califia Farms roast their coffee beans to maintain these flavours. At the end of the process, you are left with a rich, sweet concentrate, that is a smooth creamy texture and will go down with ease, perfect for being packaged and sold as a ready-to-drink beverage.

Health benefits of cold brew

Renowned nutritionist, author and wellness speaker, from Sydney City Nutritionist and Food Intolerance Australia, Jennifer May has said, “Cold brewing maintains the antioxidants of the coffee bean. Antioxidants are important during and after alcohol consumption as they help to heal and prevent cellular damage, and they also help prevent disease and illness. Cold Brew Brand, Califia Farms offers a delicious cold brew range blended with nut milks for added antioxidants, nutrients, healthy fats and protein.”

Some other excellent health benefits from drinking cold brew coffee are; a lower risk of heart disease, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s Disease. As well as it being a great mood and metabolism booster, and it also being much easier on the stomach than hot coffee, with it also provides lower acidic levels which help precent reflux.
