With two weeks to go, Valentine’s Day is well and truly around the corner!

The annual celebration is a day all about showing your special someone one how much you care and appreciate them.

Unfortunately in a day and age where Tinder is the norm, a text message has replaced romantic love letters and a date consists of two people more interested in their phones than each other makes us really wonder is romance is officially dead?

Tala Scott, founder of Evolve Today, relationship expert and author believes that Valentine’s Day has gone passed its used by date and the tradition of showing love to your partner should actually be a daily celebration.

“As important as it is to celebrate your partnership we should all be making an effort to show our partner how much we value them every day not just on Feb 14.”

According to Tala, Valentine’s Day is creating negative habits in being too complacent in a relationship.

In order to enhance a relationship you need to strengthen it throughout the year, rather than on one day.

Tala put together a list of things couples can do that will make every day feel like Valentine’s Day for you and your partner!

  1. Take time – acknowledge one another and show your partner how much they mean to you by simply giving them a little bit of attention. Sometimes we forget the simple things in life that can make the biggest difference! Relationships are important and need nurturing.
  2. Go on an adventure – just because we get older every year does not mean we lose all our adventure! Act like an 18 year old couple and have some fun together – have a laugh! Talk, listen, connect, share and enjoy each other’s company.
  1. Appreciation – every day should be a declaration of how we really feel. We shouldn’t keep our feelings bottled up, especially not our love. Appreciation is the golden gesture.
  1. Learn their language of love – everyone has a different language of love according to Gary Chapman, this is how a person shows and receives love. For instance, through physical touch, words of affirmation, quality time, acts of service, or receiving gifts. Everyone works differently and its worth figuring out these things about your partner.
  1. Date night without kids – its okay to have a break from being a responsible parent and just simply have fun together. Set aside time for romance and intimacy!
  1. Put yourself in your partner’s shoes – acknowledge what they go through at work or at home. Showing support is a gemstone in a relationship. Make sure you both know how much the other is doing whether it is in work, home, or with children and acknowledge them for the effort and work they put in.
  1. Communicate – this has been on repeat for years and years and I’m sure we’ve all heard it before. But in saying that, it is so important to express if your feeling happy, sad, frustrated, excited and so forth. Talk to your partner about how you feel.
  1. Fight fair – this is a little rule I like and it’s; don’t go to sleep on an argument. If you can’t find a resolution, its time to agree to disagree. Discuss all matters fairly, and try to resolve issues. You don’t want to build up resentment within the relationship.
  1. Self-love – you know what they say, if you can’t love yourself no one else will. Self-love is the most sacred gifts you can give your partner.
  1. Get help – sometimes difficulties just wont go away, so if you and your partner want to work things out, seek professional help. It may be the answer to counsel you right back on track and allow you both to be completely happy together.
