World’s first sustainable breakfast set: Philips Eco Collection

Living an eco-friendly life is becoming increasingly crucial for thousands of Australians and millions worldwide, with concerns for the environment and climate change more evident than ever before. The changes we implement in our homes don’t always feel like they’re making an impact. Still, slight gestures — whether it’s repurposing consumer goods or purchasing eco-friendly products and appliances — are small contributions to a greener planet.

Philips Eco Collection

If you’re a foodie and environmentally conscious, Philips Domestic Appliances has introduced the world’s first sustainable Eco Collection breakfast set made with bio-based plastics. This modern set includes a toaster and kettle with a lustrous finish and an energy-saving function. What does this mean? Essentially, it means that every morning you can enjoy the most important meal of the day and make a small difference to a greener planet in your home.

What is bio-based plastics and their benefits?

To put it simply, a product or material made from bio-based plastic means it is either full or partly derived from biomass (plants).

Philips Eco Collection

The introduction of these bio-based plastics, in the production of Philips Eco Collection, is made from used cooking oil as part of the product assembly. It starts with sunflowers that are processed from cooking oil, which is then collected after its use in the kitchen and transported to the factory. This specialises in the process of turning waste products into bio-based plastic granules, which are then used to manufacture this Eco collection.

There are several benefits to this, with the most notable including:

  • a reduction in water pollution
  • a reduction in CO2 emissions
  • a reduction in the use of natural resources
  • a reduction of conventional plastic

One of the most appealing elements of this set is the partnership Philips Domestic Appliances has established with Eco Matcher, and their commitment to planting a tree with every purchase from the Eco Collection. The manager Geoff Hannaford says that his vision with this collection is “to grow the Buhay Forest in time thereby offsetting our carbon footprint and at the same time, help the planet and local communities.” Although its 2022 and we’ve seen the emergence of innovative products and appliances across Australia, it’s still difficult to find an appliance with a meaningful mission behind it. The creators of the Eco Collection have formed a mission that places an emphasis on the social and economic impacts of tree planting for the development of communities and long-term sustainable empowerment.

The Eco Collection

There are currently two products available in this collection that we would consider must-haves or essentials for any household. The first is the Eco Collection 5000 Series Toaster. But this toaster is unlike any ordinary toaster and definitely an appliance you’d want to purchase as a replacement for the current one you have and here’s why.

There are a few key features that stand out.

  1. The automatic power button which ensures energy saving
  2. There are 8 browning settings so if you like your toast crip like me, you are able to play around with the settings until you’ve reached your preference
  3. The rehear and defrost function, which is perfect if you keep your bread in the fridge or freezer
  4. Lastly the crumb tray, keeps mess to a minimum

You can pair the toaster with the 5000 series kettle. It holds 1.7L which is perfect if you live on your own or have a young family or guests over. This kettle also features an automatic power button. One of our favourite parts of this collection is that the white sleek finish means it fits in with any kitchen whether it is modern/contemporary or more traditional.

Being eco-friendly means living in a way that is not harmful to the natural environment. For many people, this looks like being more sustainable and conscious of the packaging and plastic used and the toxins in the products they purchase. There are various ways to lessen the negative effects on the planet and investing in sustainable appliances like the Eco Collection is an added benefit for your family and the environment.
