LG G Flex

  • March 20, 2014
  • Atal Hakikat
The smartphone industry is exploding with the ever-growing demand for what’s next in the long line of new innovative mobile technology. Well, what’s next is here. LG, collaborating with LG Chem, introduces the G FLEX. The G FLEX, which runs on Android, follows what seems to be the trend of the moment with one of the first ever smartphone’s to have a curved surface. The curved format is an ongoing signature style from LG, last year they launched the EA9800 Curved 3D OLED Television which was the first of its kind in the technological sphere, and now which LG have implemented with their smartphones. The curved design may sound like a small feature, compared to all the other phones on the market, but the curved design adds to the phone, creating a more hands on approach, which helps enhance the smooth display of the phone’s outline and format. The touch screen is wide and has a tremendously smooth service, which makes navigating around the phone so easy and readily available for use.

What do Michael Jackson, James Dean and John F Kennedy all have in common? Loafers. Yes, that’s right, loafers. The loafer, a typically low based, lace-less shoe with a low heel, most commonly comes in black and tan has had a huge surge in the fashion industry in last decade. Now quite possibly one of the most common fashion choices made by men and woman the world over.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 10.1

  • March 5, 2014
  • Atal Hakikat
Lenovo presents it’s new vision in the world of tablets, the Lenovo yoga 10.1. The structure of the tablet is quite different to any of the other tablets on the market, with its 10.1 inch screen with laser-etched casing prevents the tablet from scratches, and its wide 178 degree viewing angle, as well as its sharp design and structure of the tablet which is made up of polly carbon which forms around the frame of the device, while the base handle is constructed of aluminum and also has rubber stops at the edges of the base which creates a sturdy hold for the user. The other great thing about the base is that  there’s a latch which flips open and be used as a stand so that you’re able to hold and tilt the screen.

If you’re on the market for a luxury, compact ballpoint pen, the LAMY Pico is impossible to pass up. The Pico has a telescoping body, thats 9.4cm long when retracted and 12.6cm when expanded to write. The pens chrome finish gives it a metallic appearance, however  in reality, the Pico is made from moulded plastic; a material which LAMY has been pioneering with since the companies birth in 1966. The pens compact and sturdy body with a telescopic barrel and anti-roll device makes it perfect for use on-the-go, and this chic and functional design has won the Pico awards from Red Dot Design, and the Design Center Stuttgart. The Pico comes in chrome, red, blue and black finishes, and is priced at around $70AUD, although prices vary between retailers.

Japanese Onsen

  • February 13, 2014
  • Atal Hakikat
Scattered through every major city in Japan can be found a series of cultural gems that lie in stark contrast to the chaotic metropolis they inhabit. Known as ‘onsen’, these public baths mark the quintessentially Japanese fusion between tradition and progression, culture and function. The onsen harks back to a time when not every household had a private bath, and thus the need for hygiene was facilitated by public open-plan bathing, often using natural hot spring water. These public baths were also social spaces where news was exchanged and business deals arranged. In today’s onsen, little has changed. There is a strict code of conduct for using the bathhouse- after paying a 300 yen (roughly $3 AU dollar) bathing fee, one is to enter the change room and remove all clothing. Bathing suits are not permitted, nor are tattoos (in Japan tattoos are heavily associated with the Yakuza, the largest crime syndicate in the country). From the changing room one proceeds to the bathing area, generally a pool filled with steaming water surrounded by a series of small showers. You must wash your hair and body before entering the onsen. Hair must be worn up, under a folded towel. If you do something wrong, fellow bathers will let you know (often with a swift poke to the ribs). And yet, despite the strict and at first quite daunting code of conduct, these spaces are primarily social and ultimately very relaxed. Older women chat from across the room as they soap each other’s backs, and although the language is unfamiliar the tone is immediately recognisable- they are gossiping, although about what or whom it is unclear. Perhaps the most remarkable and ultimately inspirational thing about the presence of onsen culture in Japanese day-to-day life is that the new, technologically advanced country has simply taken this ancient ritual into its stride, worked around it instead of over it, thus allowing both towering buildings dedicated to scientific progression and tiny wooden bathhouses to exist side by side. This, in my opinion, in the essence of Japanese culture. Both form and functionality, culture and clear-headed rationality play vital and simultaneous roles in this remarkable country.

ZBoard Electric Skateboard

  • February 13, 2014
  • Atal Hakikat
Like all great innovation, the ZBoard was created to cater to a genuine and specific need – in this case, the need for a faster, easier, and more portable way to get around Los Angeles. The designers of the ZBoard were students at the University of Southern California, who grew weary of having bikes stolen, and pushing their skateboards up the notorious hills of LA. The creators, unable to get the project off the ground without sufficient funding, setup a Kickstarter in March of 2012, which quickly raised $US278,767, far more than their initial goal of $US10,000. Their creation is the latest in electric skateboard technology; rather than using a remote control, the ZBoard has front and rear foot pads, which use sensors to evaluate the pressure applied and hence dictate the speed of the boards electric motor. This design allows the user to simply lean forward to go forward, and lean back to stop, and this system creates a feeling of independence, and authenticity, that other electric skateboards don’t provide. The board can travel up to 30km on one charge of 5 – 7 hours, and reaches speeds of close to 30km/h.

The Tile

When was the last time you put down your keys, and promptly forgot their location? How about your wallet? Your laptop? Well, the age old problem of misplacing your essentials is about to be solved. The Tile is a matchbook sized bluetooth device, which can be attached to your laptop, keys, wallet, even your bike, and works in conjunction with an iOS application to allow you to find your misplaced items. If your item is within earshot, it can be found by activating the Tile’s inbuilt speaker which will sound an alert when triggered. The application also has a radar-like function, which uses the strength of the bluetooth connection as an indicator of how close you are to the device as you search. The Tile also allows for the tracking stolen of items; if an item is tagged as ‘lost’ within the app, it will be automatically detected by other Tile users devices. If your device is detected within up to 150 ft of another user, you will be notified of its GPS location through the application. Although this feature may not be particularly useful in the products early days, the more users the application has, the more productive it will be.
