White is often thought of as a staple colour, something we accompany with a brighter feature wall in rooms, along with the popular choice for bathrooms and kitchens. It represents cleanliness, purity and light and literally goes, with everything. However, white seems to be overtaking the feature wall, with increasing amounts designers and home owners choosing more eggshell than vivid colourings.
Picking a ‘blank canvas’ for your walls and main decorating features, leaves much room for decorating statements and changes. As seen in the photos, each room appears crisp and clean, hotel like. Splashes of greens give the room an airy feeling, as well as accentuate the natural light entering from the open windows. Choosing different tones of white, perhaps even a touch of blush will give the room a slightly warmer feel during wintery months, without overpowering everything.
Both polished and painted timber flooring will further compliment your rooms, as they are sleek and streamline. If you aren’t a fan of floor boards, combine a thick rug to add texture.
White rooms work particularly well if they are small, as they make the room appear larger and more inviting. If you have small windows, accompany white curtains and/or blinds to keep the flow on effect of the ashen theme. However, keep in mind that white is highly reflective, so if your room is facing east, it will be significantly lighter than your others and glairiness may be an issue.
There are so many different ‘whites’. From Eggshell to Antique, there are literally hundreds to choose from. Feel free to pick two or three to work with, as they tone well and give the impression of texture to your walls. Select a brighter colour to combine throughout the room/house if you wish to brighten, but remembering to keep the main pieces of furniture white will allow you to easily adapt if you change your mind.
