38 The New Mercedes-Benz A-Class 2We’ve made mention of the surge in popularity of the hatchback before. The once modest hatch is now suddenly the most sought after choice for modern every day use. When the consider the pros, it’s quite a logical choice really. You get all the practicalities of driving a smaller, more compact vehicle, while also getting the full blown luxuries of any other larger car.

We’ve also written about one premium compact hatchback on offer at the moment before. You can check out the Volvo V40 here. But here’s another alternative – one that takes the cake in terms of an opulent driving experience.

The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class is set to hit showrooms around Australia this month. It’s an update to the old A-Class, and is definitely different all round. The tall and narrow features of the old A-Class have now been replaced by curved surfaces and a longer and lower body. Inside, you can also now opt for subtle carbon-fibre trimming through the dashboard and doors and of course leather, leather, leather… All of which is more likely to hit aesthetic taste buds in the right spot compared to the predecessor. The coupe-like, angled windscreen and low nose isn’t just pleasing to the eye, however. This design also reduces drag and makes wind noise barely existent.

Like all other Mercedes-Benz lines, the A-Class range comes in 4 levels with more improvements as you go up the ladder. Starting from the standard A180, then A200, A200 CDI and A250 Sport, all vehicles in the range will nevertheless include parking sensors, a reversing camera and an auto-reverse park system.

At the top of the ladder, the A250 Sport is looking to come at $49,900 and is powered by a 155kW 2.0-litre engine. For the extra pennies, you also get 18-inch wheels, lowered suspension and the fastest accelerating model in the range that should hit 0-100km/h in 6.6 seconds! The speed is possible due to 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission and the smoothest gearshift through paddle shifting.

Although the littlest Merc, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class doesn’t skimp out on all the features you need, and all those that you want.

It may be little, but it’s still a Mercedes-Benz at heart. And you know what you’re getting when it comes to Mercedes-Benz.

Call your dealer for a full list of the specs, or visit Mercedes-Benz online here.
