The annual InStyle & Audi Women of Style awards were held in Sydney last week, with a star-studded crowd turning up to Carriageworks to celebrate some of Australia’s leading young women.
The awards cover 10 categories: beauty, charity and community, fashion, business, entertainment, lifestyle, science and environment, arts and culture, reader’s choice and Style Scholarship. The more than 200 successful and stylish nominees all exhibited the core values of the Instyle & Audi Style Scholarship awards – passion, confidence and integrity – and were recognised not only for their style, but also for what they bring to Australia with the value of their accomplishments.
This years ‘Style Scholarship’, a $10,000 bursary that goes to support the career development of one deserving young women, was awarded to Marita Cheng. The 2012 winner of Young Australian of the Year impressed with the creation of her robot prototype, the ‘Teleroo’, a videophone on wheels that is designed to benefit a range of users from remote workers, to the mobility-challenged. The judges were inspired by her intelligence, ingenuity, passion and drive to make a difference. The ideal to inspire other young women to reach for their goals and challenge societies expectations of typically male dominated industries meant Marita was the undeniable winner of the Style Scholarship category. Through her endeavours Marita hopes to encourage more women to pursue engineering roles. Andrew Doyle, Managing Director, Audi Australia Pty Ltd presented Cheng with the award, explaining how her clear vision and support of women in the engineering industry made her a very deserving scholarship recipient.
