After more than 30 years since her first appearance as host of the Australian International Design Awards, Australian of the Year, Ita Buttrose, returned to announce the 2013 winners at Vivid Sydney.

This year, 66 products and services were given awards in recognition of innovation and excellence in the renowned design competition, presented by Good Design Australia. The top prize of Design Award of the Year went to the Blackmagic Cinema Camera, a high quality compact video camera with an intuitive user interface and affordable price tag. Judges were impressed by the camera’s deign features and significant market potential. The device puts Hollywood filmmaking into the hands of the everyday user.

The judges commented on the product calling it a “brilliant piece of design in every regard. This product is a showcase of what professional design can do when used effectively. It will revolutionise the film industry and highlight Australia’s capability to design and develop high technology products with global appeal.”

The Australian International Design Awards attracted over 250 entries this year ranging from cars to cameras, kitchen tongs to computer tablets and street furniture to scientific diagnostic equipment. The judging took place in May in Sydney with six panels of Australian and international design experts assessing every entry against a rigorous set of criteria including form, function and safety standards.

“The standard of entries in this year’s competition has yet again raised the bar for design and innovation in Australia,” said Brandon Gien, Managing Director of Good Design Australia.

“We are also excited to be joining Vivid Sydney to present the Australian International Design Festival that celebrates all things design and the importance of design thinking in business.”

With a 55 year history, the Australian International Design Awards is Australia’s longest running and most prestigious design recognition program.
