Some vases are picked for what goes inside them. The Mette Ditmer Art Piece Artistic Vase is one of the rarer kind — a piece that holds its own whether it’s cradling a loose armful of stems or standing completely empty on a console table. Its softly irregular curves and chalky, hand-finished surface read less like tableware and more like a small sculpture that happens to be functional, which is exactly the point of the Art Piece collection it belongs to.

What is Mette Ditmer’s Art Piece collection?

Mette Ditmer began in 1995 as a textiles-led studio, choosing fabrics first and foremost for how they felt and how long they lasted rather than chasing trends. That instinct for tactile, durable materials never left the brand as it grew into a full home interior range spanning bathroom, living and kitchen categories. Four values have carried through every expansion: authenticity, genuinely outstanding quality, a sense of everyday well-being, and an almost fussy attention to detail. The Art Piece line is the clearest expression of all four — sculptural homewares built to be lived with, not just looked at.

From the pottery wheel to stone resin: how each piece is made

The collection takes its name from Mette Ditmer herself, whose own ceramic practice sits behind the range. Each Art Piece design is first hand-sculpted by Ditmer in clay, working the form on the wheel the traditional way, before it’s translated into stone resin for production. That second stage still involves manual finishing by hand, which is why no two vases, bowls or figurines are ever quite identical — small variations in surface and shape are a feature of the process, not a flaw in it. It’s a slower, more considered route to a finished object than most mass-produced homewares take, and it shows in the way the pieces feel in hand as much as how they look on a shelf.

A quietly sculptural design language

The Art Piece Artistic Vase measures a compact W30 x L18 x H33.5cm and comes in two finishes, Sand and White, both leaning into soft, organic colour rather than anything glossy or graphic. Design-wise, it sits closer to a gallery object than a traditional vase — asymmetric, tactile, and content to be a quiet focal point rather than a backdrop for flowers. That’s what makes it so easy to style: a single generous arrangement gives it presence on a dining table, while left completely empty on a shelf or console it still reads as a deliberate piece of styling in its own right. The same sculptural language carries across the rest of the Art Piece family, including bowls, figurines and candle holders, so pieces can be mixed and layered together without feeling matchy.

Why the Art Piece collection works

  • Genuinely double-duty: looks considered whether it’s styled with an arrangement or left completely empty.
  • Sculptural presence: organic, asymmetric forms that work as standalone objects, not just vessels.
  • Tactile stone-resin finish: a soft, chalky surface with the individual character of a hand-finished piece.
  • Considered scale: compact enough (W30 x L18 x H33.5cm) for shelves, consoles and dining tables alike.
  • A collection, not a one-off: bowls, figurines and candle holders share the same design language, making it simple to build a cohesive vignette over time.
  • Backed by a real craft process: rooted in founder Mette Ditmer’s own hand-sculpting practice rather than a purely decorative gimmick.

Where to find Mette Ditmer in Australia

Mette Ditmer has been a Design Mode International (DMI) partner in Australia since 2023, which is how the brand’s Art Piece range and its wider homewares collection have found their way into local stores. BEON carries the label locally — browse the full Art Pieces collection (44 pieces across vases, bowls, figurines and candle holders) or the broader Mette Ditmer brand collection to see everything currently available. The exact Artistic Vase shown here isn’t separately listed at the time of writing, so it’s worth confirming stock and finish on-site — but a close sibling from the same family, the Art Piece Sculpture (W19 x L14 x H32cm, $279 AUD), gives a good sense of the pricing and scale to expect from the range.
