Kia PV5 Cargo: Australia’s Cheapest Electric Van Goes to Work

For Australian trades, couriers and small businesses eyeing an electric van, the sums haven’t always added up – until now. The Kia PV5 Cargo has landed as the country’s most affordable new electric van, opening from $55,990 before on-road costs, and it does more than just hit a friendly number. Built as a dedicated commercial vehicle rather than a van-ified passenger car, the PV5 Cargo pairs real-world range with genuine load capacity, wrapped in Kia’s now-familiar five-star safety package.

What is the Kia PV5 Cargo?

The PV5 Cargo is the first local arrival in Kia’s new Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) line-up – a family of purpose-built commercial EVs engineered around fleets rather than adapted from an existing passenger model. In Australia it launches in a single configuration, the Cargo S Long Range: a two-seat, front-wheel-drive van built for city and regional delivery runs, trade work and last-mile logistics.

Range, battery and charging

Under the floor sits a 71.2kWh lithium-ion battery driving a 120kW/250Nm front-mounted motor, good for a WLTP-rated 416km of range – enough for most metro delivery routes with margin to spare. When it’s time to top up, the PV5 Cargo accepts DC fast charging at up to 128kW, taking the battery from 10 to 80 percent in around 30 minutes, while a full charge from an 11kW AC wallbox takes roughly 6.5 hours overnight. A vehicle-to-load (V2L) function also lets the van power tools or equipment on site – a genuinely useful trick for tradies.

Cargo space and payload built for work

Strip away the marketing and the numbers that matter most to a fleet buyer are volume and payload – and the PV5 Cargo delivers 4.4m³ of load space behind dual sliding side doors and rear barn doors, with a maximum payload of 740kg and 750kg towing capacity. The load bay measures 2255mm long, 1565mm wide and 1520mm high, enough for standard pallets and stacked courier loads without awkward repacking.

Safety and technology

Kia hasn’t skimped on tech to chase a low price. The PV5 Cargo carries a 2025 ANCAP Platinum safety rating, backed by seven airbags, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep and lane follow assist, blind spot monitoring, driver attention warning and rear cross-traffic alert. Inside, a 12.9-inch touchscreen runs wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with the Kia Connect app enabling remote climate control and vehicle monitoring, plus over-the-air software updates to keep a fleet current without a workshop visit.

Who the Kia PV5 Cargo is built for

The Kia PV5 Cargo is especially well-suited to:

  • Couriers and last-mile delivery operators who need predictable daily range
  • Trade businesses that want on-site power via vehicle-to-load
  • Fleet managers chasing lower running costs and emissions targets
  • Regional and metro operators covered by the 7-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty (8 years/160,000km on the battery)

Kia PV5 Cargo price and availability in Australia

The Cargo S Long Range is priced from $55,990 plus on-road costs and is on sale now through Kia dealers nationally, undercutting rivals such as the Volkswagen ID. Buzz Cargo and positioning the PV5 as the entry point into electric commercial motoring in Australia. Buyers can configure and price a PV5 Cargo through Kia’s online Build & Price tool, with servicing intervals set at every 24 months or 30,000km – a modest ask for a vehicle designed to spend its life on the road, not in the workshop.
