Philips’ innovations in connected lighting takes the humble light bulb to new frontiers. New scientific research has changed the way we think about lighting. Taken for granted as a source of illumination, light bulbs and artificial light are ubiquitous, with an estimated 50 billion individual points of light in the world today which roughly translates to 7 per person. Most of those that enjoy the benefits of easy and instant illumination don’t consciously perceive or reflect on the importance of impact of lighting in their personal lives.

George Yianni, the Philips Lighting head of technology says, “We’ve evolved for the last however many millions of years to expect light from the sun. If there’s a bright, cool white light at midday from the sun, our brain is hardwired to be awake and alert. If there is a very warm dim light such as what you gets around sunset, our brain is hardwired to start winding down and relaxing.”

With increasing knowledge about different types of light and ways to use them, Philips has revisited the fundamental functions of the light bulb and reinvented new applications for it. By combining the latest connectivity and lighting technology, Philips has successfully created a system of connected lighting that responds to human sensitivity different hues and levels of light.

With uses such as helping us relax, concentrate better, sleep more easily, Philips connected lighting is a way towards living and working better. Lighting has the ability to change the entire look and feel of a space. Smart lighting has endless applications from providing us with security, comfort and aesthetics. In the workplace the Philips office lighting range is an intelligent, eco-friendly and energy efficient system that utilises Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) to connect office lighting fixtures to the building’s IT network. The system acts as a pathway for information, which forms an indoor positioning grid that is able to provide locating services to workers inside the building.

Managers are able to access real time and historical information about the building’s usage. Targeted and precise illumination and services for optimal comfort and energy efficiency. Philips office lighting also allows employees are able to use their smartphones to customise lighting to their individual preferences and tasks. Says Yianni, “For the last hundred years, people have been used to expecting nothing more on and off from a light bulb. We are changing that.”
