Could Buildings of the Future be 3D Printed?

Yes, you read that title correct, “Could buildings of the future be 3D printed?” Is it science fiction or science fact? Lets explore…

Aurecon consulting engineers are experts in engineering management, design, planning and project management.

Recently Aurecon released an interesting white paper called ‘Buildings of the Future: science fiction or science fact?’

The white paper shares thoughts around demands and challenges in reaching Intelligent Building, and what the next steps might be.

The world has changed dramatically and continues to change at an exponential rate where we are moving fast towards an increasingly digital, interconnected society.

However the built environment has been slower to change than other industries, so in some ways it has to play ‘catch-up’ clutching tightly to the ‘status quo’.

As the rest of the world keeps evolving, so too must the built environment, which is where 3D printing steps in.

However, this isn’t as simple as printing something and making it work.

According to Aurecon’s white paper, the ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to Buildings of the Future is becoming less and less palatable.

Aurecon’s Buildings of the Future Leader, Peter Greaves says, “The 3D printer is significantly disrupting the traditional design role held by the structural engineer but, at the same time, presents exciting new opportunities in how building designers will create, relocate and shape Buildings of the Future.”

For now, entertaining the idea of 3D printed buildings is great, and these options are unlocking the architectural limitations of size, weight and shape that the building and construction industry works within today.

In order to bring this to life the industry will have to evolve, so there is still a possibility the future of our buildings could potentially involve 3D printing.

Colour Doesn’t Matter speaks from the heart of many, including Artist Megan Adams, and AFL footy legend, Adam Goodes.

Artist Megan Adams couldn’t believe her luck when she bumped into her desired subject in the street last year in July, that person was AFL star Adam Goodes.

Megan indented to paint the AFL legend for this years Archibald prize, with a view to donate 100% of the profits to the GO Foundation.

GO Foundation was founded by Adam Goodes, Michael O’Loughlin and James Gallichan in 2009 to build a brighter future for Indigenous Australians.

With great intentions and of course a liking to her work, Goodes accepted the offer and had Megan paint his portrait.

Megan said “I asked Adam if I could paint him and he really took the time to look through my website and my previous works. He was very impressed by my portrait of Wayne Bennett in particular.”

The portrait is a multitude of colours and titled Colour Doesn’t Matter, implying race and colour.

Colour Doesn't Matter

Megan explains the concept is one that hits close to home, “A close friend of mine has an indigenous son and he has been subject to racial slurs and bullying because of the colour of his skin.”

With a heartbreaking story behind the concept, Adam Goodes was the perfect person for the job after being subject to racial abuse himself.

“I’m so passionate about putting a stop to racism here in Australia and I wanted the portrait to reflect that. The colour of your skin does not matter.”

The Adam Goodes artwork will be sold on Megan’s website for $5,000 and 100% of the proceeds will go to the GO Foundation.

If you are interested in purchasing the ‘Colour Doesn’t Matter’ artwork or to view any of Megan’s other work visit her site here.

The winners of the 2017 Good Design Awards were announced last week for Young Australian Design Award for designers under 30.

Each year we are presented with some of the most unbelievable and innovative designs at the annual Good Design Awards in Australia.

The Good Design Awards is Australia’s most prestigious design award event for everything design and innovation, and this year we saw some incredible products and concepts.

The Young Australian Design Award for innovation went to HUG – Self Regulation System for Children with Autism, designed by Era Camilet from the University of New South Wales.

The Young Australian Design Award for Technology was awarded to Stride Running Coach, designed by Jessi Wilkinson also from University of New South Wales.

The Young Australian Design Award for Sustainability went to Dynamics in Impermanence designed by Nicole Larkin from the University of Sydney.

Finally the coveted Young Australian Design Award of the Year for 2017 was granted to e-motion designed by Lilian Hambling from the University of New South Wales.

What this entails is e-textile menswear garments, in other words, wearable technology that creates a new form of non-verbal communication.

It does this by measuring physiological data from the body such as pulse, muscle tension, and proximity and expresses itself as dynamic light displays.

All the winners of this year’s Good Design awards will be open at exhibition and showcased overseas giving the public an opportunity to get their hands on the products!

The new Holden Astra Sedan receives maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating with its passive and active safety features.

The soon-to-be Holden Astra Sedan has joined its hatch sibling in being awarded the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating.

Following its recent test in Australia, the European manufactured Holden Astra Sedan’s credentials are thanks to its lightweight, high-strength steel safety cage.

This provides the most outstanding level of passive safety, particularly in side impact testing.

As well as the side high-strength steel safety cage, other safety features include two ISOFIX child seat attachment points to aid easier child seat fitment.

Passive safety is critical when a vehicle is involved in a collision, and the Holden Astra Sedan performs well in the case of a collision.

Another safety feature, which has been adopted with other models now offered with the new Astra, is a rear view camera.

More features like the ‘Holden Eye’ forward-facing camera is key to Astra Sedan LT and LTZ’s active safety use.

This technology is designed to alert or correct the driver before a collision happens.

Key features include; Lane Keep Assist, which nudges you back into your lane if you accidentally veer out, Forward Distance Indicator and Forward Collision Alert, which advise a safe distance between your car and other vehicles.

Another fantastic feature is the Blind Spot Alert, which gives drivers an indication of when a vehicle is approaching in their blind spot via and illuminated icon in the outside the mirrors.

Are you spending too much of your food budget on junk food like the rest of Australia?

According to new research Australian households are spending majority of food budget on junk food.

These figures show Aussies spend 58% of their food budget on junk food, with 14% on take-away food, and 4% on sweetened drinks.

Professor Amanda Lee presented her research at the Dieticians Association of Australia’s National Conference in Hobart last week.

Professor Lee’s data shows healthy diets are more affordable than unhealthy diets, costing households 15 per cent less.

The Australian Health Survey data shows few Australians consume diets consistent with national recommendations.

Professor Lee said, “Less than four per cent of Australians eat adequate quantities of healthy foods, yet more than 35 per cent of energy intakes comes from discretionary foods and drinks, which provide little nutrition.”

Poor diet is hurting our health and hip pocket.

These figures are particularly worrying as poor diet is the leading preventable cause of ill health in Australia and globally.

It contributes to more than 18 per cent of death in Australia, while obesity costs the nation $58 billion annually.

“At the moment, basic healthy foods like fresh vegetables and fruit are except from the GST, but there’s been talk of extending this to all foods,” said Professor Lee.

Australia needs a coordinated approach to nutrition policy – a call echoed by the Dieticians Associations of Australia, the Public Health Association of Australia, the Heart Foundation and Nutrition Australia.

For further information on how you can learn more about implementing a new National Nutrition Policy, visit Dietician Association of Australia online.
